SCATS Named OC's "Best Competitive Gymnastics Class" of 2017

Best in OC 2017

Thanks to the editorial staff of Parenting OC for picking SCATS as 2017 Editors’ Choice Award / BestGymnastics Class in OC!  This our 3rd time in 4 years taking home the gold, so to speak. Look for the September issue of Parenting OC Magazine in our front office and around town to see SCATS featured ON THE COVER and within among other winners.

We would like to extend our sincerest  “THANK YOU” to all of you, our hard-working and supportive SCATS parents that voted for us in the readers’ poll, and moreover who continue to keep your kids involved with an activity that is truly wonderful for child development on so many levels.

Over our 54 years,  we have been fortunate to develop an environment that resembles an extended family more than anything.  Parents, just as much as our coaches, front office staff and fabulous gymnasts of all ages, are a part of that family.

So here’s to you, SCATS moms, dads, grandparents and supportive family.  Thank you for all you do! You are such a tremendous part of what makes  this a second home for so many, and for that we are grateful.

Danny Yoon + FIVE SCATS Alumni do Big Things at the 2017 P&G USA Championships in Anaheim

Congrats SCATS Guys!Wow, what a HUGE weekend for the SCATS guys at the 2017 USA Championships!

This August, Orange County was home to the nation’s most prestigious annual gymnastics event when The Honda Center of Anaheim hosted the P&G National Championships.  The biggest names in women’s and men’s gymnastics competed for gold and spots on the US National Teams while also vying for selection to the World Championships team headed to Montreal this fall.

What a year to be in our own backyard, too, as there were a total of SIX guys on the competitive stage representing SCATS this time around.

Danny Yoon competed at the Junior Elite level for the first time at P&G’s and came in 9th All Around in addition to 5th on floor exercise and a place on the podium for P-bars with the silver medal!  Danny kept cool and collected throughout the meet, which in itself is impressive given his stiff competition, the high stakes, media coverage, and hometown factor. Big things are on the horizon for Danny, and we look forward to seeing where his determination takes him next.

Alongside Danny, SCATS alumni were at the Honda Center in force this year for the Senior men’s competition.  Adrian De Los Angeles, Alex Powarzynski, Kanji Oyama, Cameron Bock and Sam Mikulak all competed and made a lasting impression.  Representing Oklahoma U on a full scholarship, Alex took home the bronze on vault and landed in the top 10 All Around. Meanwhile, his former Oklahoma Sooner teammate, Kanji Oyama, was always close by as he followed Alex in 5th place on vault finals and finished 7th All Around. Both men also made the US National Team!

Another SCATS alum, who also secured a spot on the 2017 National Team, was not even certain he’d be able to compete at all earlier this year, following surgery on his Achilles tendon.  2-time Olympian Sam Mikulak has become a household name in the sport following his domination of American and NCAA gymnastics, but his injury left him wondering what was next.  Sam decided to power ahead and compete on select events in USA Champs and showed us all that he couldn’t be kept down, taking home a silver medal on pommel horse!

We couldn’t be more proud of all our SCATS guys, and look forward to their next moves.  Thanks to everyone who rooted for them at the meet!

11 Health Benefits of Gymnastics According to Science

11 Health Benefits of Gymnastics

Gymnastics is one of the best exercises for training for overall health and wellness. Multiple studies on this subject prove the importance of gymnastics for bone, muscle, and cognitive health. It’s not only about building muscle and improving flexibility, gymnasts make healthy lifestyle choices, are confident, and are able to make smart decisions to become successful adults.

Training your mind to feel happy and stress-free involves regular physical exercise. But boosting one’s cognitive and emotional state of mind requires a more intense and consistent training program. And that’s why gymnastics is so good for you! It helps build self-morale, determination, and better communication skills. It also improves quality of sleep, fights depression, and aids weight loss in the most effective way.

Participating in gymnastics from a younger age is important. It targets all muscle groups for total-body strength and flexibility. Plus, it fights a bunch of metabolic and immune disorders by lowering blood pressure and releasing antioxidant enzymes within the body.

With that out of the way, check out this EXCELLENT comprehensive article on 11 science-backed health benefits of gymnastics courtesy of JenReviews.com.

SCATS Voted OC's "Best Gymnastics Class" of 2016

Best in OC 2016

The results are in, and thanks to you, SCATS has been voted Orange County’s “Best Gymnastics Class” for the 2nd time in three years!  Look for the September issue of Parenting OC Magazine around town to see SCATS featured among winners in other categories.

We would like to extend our sincerest  “THANK YOU” to all of you, our hard-working and supportive SCATS parents that voted for us, and moreover who continue to keep your kids involved with an activity that is truly wonderful for child development on so many levels.

Over our 53 years,  we have been fortunate to develop an environment that resembles an extended family more than a workplace.  Parents, just as much as our coaches, front office staff and fabulous gymnasts of all ages, are a part of that family.

SCATS Wins 1st Place for 12th Year in HB 4th of July Parade

4th of July 2017

Thank you to all the SCATS families that came out to the 113th Annual(!) Huntington Beach 4th of July Parade this year and showed your support for the gym and our community!  We took home the 1st place trophy for best youth float for the 12th time in our 15 years of participation, and we had an absolute blast down there with our friends and families.  Hopefully you caught some of the awesome ABC 7 coverage if you couldn’t make it downtown on Monday.  Check out the coverage of SCATS at our Instagram and Facebook pages. If you took any photos of your own, please share or tag SCATS in them!  We’d love you to send them on over to us at info@scatsgymnastics.com.

A special thanks and congratulations goes out to our staff and families who worked very hard to make our float something truly special this and every year, and of course our SCATS Team for being the super stars of the show.  You all rule!

If you’ve never attended the HB Parade, make sure to stop by next time around.  It’s actually the largest Independence Day parade west of the Mississippi, and it’s a fun way for the family to spend the day prior to the BBQs & fireworks shows.

See you there next year!

Mikulak Takes 4th on High Bar, 7th All Around in Rio, "Final Five Dominate Women's Gymnastics

Congrats Sam!Congratulations to SCATS alum, Sam Mikulak for an outstanding performance and unrelenting effort in the 2016 Olympics in Rio! And our hats are off to the “Final Five” in Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian, who simply dominated the 31st Olympiad with an unprecedented landslide team victory followed by many individual medals.

Sam finished the qualification round on the very first day of Olympic competition in FIRST place on floor exercise and with the rest of men’s Team USA in 2nd for team.  Finals proved to be challenging as our boys faced extremely tough competition in the seemingly unstoppable Japanese team, as well as the very talented Russian and Chinese men’s teams.  The consistently high-scoring performances from the Eastern competitors and the UK, coupled with some struggles of our own on pommel horse, proved to be roadblocks to the podium, but our boys still landed in 5th in the team finals at nearly FIVE full points ahead of the Brazilian team in 6th place.

In addition to qualifying for the all around final and finishing 7th (of essentially everyone on  planet earth), Sam also gave a very impressive performance on high bar that might have earned gold under other circumstances.  Sam finished 4th in the high bar event final, less than 7/100ths of a point behind the bronze medalist and only 1/10th behind the silver, which was secured by his US teammate, Danell Leyva.

The women’s team was unstoppable, captained by veteran Aly Raisman and led by Simone Biles, who quite simply is taking the sport to a new level.  The women of Team USA won the team gold by an unheard-of 8.2 points, while Biles herself took the individual all around title by a margin that would have been comparably devastating, were it not for Raisman’s high scores that clinched silver.

The women and men of Team USA brought home a total of 15 medals from artistic gymnastics competition, 8 of which were gold won by the “Final Five.”

We’re immensely proud of Sam and all the hard work he put in both in and out of Rio. We look forward to seeing him shine again in Tokyo and the coming years ahead of 2020.  Congrats to all of Team USA for their achievements. You’ve made your country and its young gymnasts very proud!

Cameron Bock Commits Early to University of Michigan for 2017 on Full Gymnastics Scholarship

Congratulations to SCATS' own, Cameron Bock, on his early commitment to University of Michigan on a full gymnastics scholarship!  Cameron has had a great deal of success in his gymnastics during recent years at SCATS under Coach Greg and Coach Albert, having won the JO National Champion title at both level 9 and level 10, as well as countless event and all around titles at the State, Regional and National levels. Cameron looks ahead with enthusiasm at the prospect of a successful NCAA career at Michigan, where other SCATS alumni have shined brightly, including Adrian De Los Angeles, 2012 Olympic Team Member & 2016 Olympic hopeful Sam Mikulak, and our very own Coach Jordan Gaarenstroom.

Cameron Bock: #1 Junior Male Gymnast in the USA

Congratulations Cam! SCATS' own Cameron Bock dominated at the 2015 P&G US Championships and solidified his place as #1 gymnast in the country of his age division.

Cameron completed day one with a landslide lead that had him competing among the seniors on day two. There, he exceeded expectations and ultimately topped the rankings in the junior division by a wide margin. His showing even had him scoring in the top 20 of the senior division, from which the U.S. National (and ultimately Olympic) Team is chosen. Cameron's handiwork also earned him a spot on the exclusive two-man team representing the United States at the International Junior Gymnastics Competition in Yokohama, Japan on September 22-23.

Way to go, Cameron! We couldn't be more proud of all your hard work paying off today and all season long. You've earned it.

Congrats, Sam! We look forward to seeing you bring it in Glasgow this October at World Championships and having you come home to visit SCATS next weekend for the Mikulak Men's Clinic. In case you missed it somehow, Kacy Cantazaro, former NCAA gymnast out of Towson, just made the finals course of American Ninja Warrior look like a Sunday stroll in the park. The obstacles aren't nearly as pretty to watch as a great floor routine, but the course is no joke-- it has left most of the show's macho male contestants walking back to the locker room in the first half.  Click here or the screenshot above to see TheBigLead.com's profile on Kacy and her hard work as an athlete, as well as the awesome video itself, of course.

4th of July 2013

Thank you to all the SCATS families that came out to the Huntington Beach 4th of July Parade this year and showed your support for the gym and our community!  Our float earned the coveted "Firecracker Award" for the 10th time in 11 years!  This year was a special one, too, as 2013 marks SCATS Gymnastics' 50th YEAR of operation in Southern California.  We took our float straight back to the decade when it all began, with the 60's fun, fashion, music and beachy culture that still defines our beloved "Surf City" to this day.

Congratulations to SCATS alum, Sam Mikulak, for an incredible job at the 2012 London Olympics!  We're so proud of Sam and his achievements and were all truly impressed by the heart, enthusiasm and class he showed from start to finish at the Games.  Team USA couldn't have asked for a better character and competitor.  We'd also like to thank Sam for coming by the gym last week to visit with some of the SCATS gymnasts and staff to talk about his road to the Olympics, the experience itself, as well as to give thanks to the SCATS coaches that played such a huge role in his growth as an athlete, Grigor Chalikyan and Albert Avchhian.  We look forward to more visits during the holidays, Sam, and to seeing you in Rio 2016 of course!Congrats Sam!

R.I.P. Coach Anatoliy Zhydkov

Rest in Peace, Anatoliy Zyhdkov

It is with our deepest regrets that we deliver the news to you that our dear friend and SCATS Boys Team coach since 2008, Anatoliy Zhydkov, passed away Friday, January 21st, 2011 following heart complications.

Those who knew Anatoliy knew a man whose love for the sport of gymnastics and his students was only matched by their adoration and respect for him. He was kind, caring, committed and beloved by his family, friends and those who had the pleasure of working alongside him. We are truly heartbroken to say goodbye to him this way and do so with heavy hearts.

We would, however, be remiss to attempt to condense our thoughts and memories of Anatoliy to this limited space and setting and would instead like to extend our sincerest condolences to his wife, Nadiya, and their entire family during this very difficult time. We would also ask humbly for your assistance in helping them.

SCATS will be collecting donations for Anatoliy's family in order to help offset the high cost of funeral services, which are to be held in the family's hometown in Wisconsin. We would greatly appreciate any contribution you or those you know would be willing to make toward this fund and effort of making such a trying time a little easier for his family.

Donation checks may be made out to SCATS Gymnastics and sent directly to the gym at the address below. Please include "Anatoliy Zhydkov Fund" in the memo line. We would also welcome cards or letters remembering Anatoliy, which we will forward to Nadiya along with your kind donation.

Thank you for your help, words, thoughts and prayers in remembering Coach Anatoliy with us. We will miss him always.

Sincerely,

The SCATS Family

Opportunities For Talented Gymnasts!

We are proud to announce that over 2009 & 2010 we were able to secure nine Division 1 college scholarships for our gymnasts: two to UCLA, two to University Of Michigan, and one each to Berkley, Oregon State, Penn State, West Point, and Arkansas.

That's the good news, but the even better news is that now we have a lot of openings at the Optional levels. Our staff is the best it has ever been and we work with very small coaching ratios of about 4:1. If you are interested, or know of someone who might be interested, contact us!
